엄마는 아무도 보지 않을 때
아무도 보지 못하는 부분을 찾아
고치고 정리하고 치우고 다듬어
가족들이 어려움 없이 살 수 있게 나은 세상을 만들어주는 사람
엄마란 바느질로 찢어진 옷을 꼬매다 손이 찔리고
밥솥 뒤에 흐른 더러운 물을 찾아 닦고
막힌 하수구 구멍 안에서 머리카락을 꺼내면서
가족들이 따뜻하고 예쁘게 건강하게 자라길 기도하는 사람
엄마란 짜증을 부르며 관심 받고 싶어하는 아이 마음 알아주고,
반찬 투정하는 아이 얼래서 한 입이라도 더 먹여주고,
이 옷이 마음에 안 든다 저 옷이 마음에 안 든다 불평하는 아이에게
맞는 옷을 찾아주고,
입을 옷이 있음에 감사할 수 있게 도와주는 사람
엄마란 바뀌는 계절마다 가족들에게 맞는 계절의 옷 신발을 입히고
바뀌는 나이와 키마다 필요한 것들을 찾아 주고
바뀌는 시기마다 맞는 식사와 음식을 만들어주고
살림을 하는 사람,
그야말로 사람을 살리는 사람.
Who A Mother Is
A Mother is she who, when no one is watching,
searches for the places no one else can see—
mending what is torn, ordering what is cluttered, cleaning and refining—
to build a better world where her family may move without hardship.
A Mother is she whose fingers are pricked while stitching a tattered garment,
who finds the dark dampness behind the rice cooker to wipe clean,
who suffers the discomfort of pulling hair from the clogged drain,
yet prays only that her family may grow warm, beautiful, and healthy.
A Mother is she who understands the crying heart of the child seeking attention through irritation,
who coaxes the fussy eater to take yet one more nourishing bite,
who finds the right clothes for the child complaining, "I dislike this, I dislike that,"
and helps that child find gratitude for what they have to wear.
A Mother is she who clothes her family in the right garments and shoes for every changing season,
who finds the necessary things for every passing age and height,
who prepares the appropriate meals and nourishment for every stage of life.
She cultivates the home, and by doing so, she nurtures life
