Sworn-in

 

 “Grit, Gratitude, Grace.”

Those were the words the judge shared during our swearing-in ceremony, accompanied by the beautiful voices of an a cappella high school choir.

In a time when the world feels heavy with division and unkindness, the judge’s words were a breath of fresh air. His message lightened the weight I’ve been carrying and replaced my worry with a renewed hope for the future of this country.

He quoted the great theologian St. Augustine, who famously said that the three most important virtues are: 1. Humility, 2. Humility, and 3. Humility. He also shared a profound piece of advice for our time: “It is okay to disagree, but we must not be disagreeable.”

Welcoming 24 new citizens from 18 different countries, he wove together the wisdom of past presidents to make us feel truly at home. This ceremony made me so proud to be an American, and I felt a deep desire to contribute to this nation in whatever way God calls me.

 

The experience reminded me of the Final Judgment. I imagined that day when we will stand before the Great Judge, experiencing the fullness of the Resurrection and officially receiving our heavenly citizenship amidst a choir of angels. Until I receive that original citizenship in Heaven, I pray: "Lord, let me glorify You through this new American citizenship for the sake of Your people!"

이 단어들은 고교 아카펠라 합창단의 아름다운 화음과 함께, 시민권 선서식에서 판사님이 우리에게 들려주신 메시지였습니다.

세상이 분열과 불친절로 무겁게만 느껴지는 요즘, 판사님의 말씀은 마치 신선한 공기 한 모금과도 같았습니다. 그분의 메시지는 그동안 제 마음을 짓눌렀던 무게를 덜어주었고, 그 자리를 이 나라의 미래에 대한 새로운 희망으로 채워주었습니다.

그분은 위대한 신학자 성 어거스틴의 말을 인용하며, 가장 중요한 세 가지 덕목은 첫째도 겸손, 둘째도 겸손, 셋째도 겸손이라고 강조하셨습니다. 또한, 우리 시대를 향한 깊은 조언도 아끼지 않으셨습니다. “서로 의견이 다를 수는 있지만, 무례한 사람이 되어서는 안 됩니다(It is okay to disagree, but we must not be disagreeable).”

18개국에서 온 24명의 새로운 시민을 환영하며, 판사님은 역대 대통령들의 지혜를 엮어 우리가 진정으로 이곳에 소속되었음을 느끼게 해 주셨습니다. 이 예식을 통해 저는 미국 시민이라는 사실이 정말 자랑스러웠고, 하나님께서 부르시는 곳 어디에서든 이 나라를 위해 헌신하고 싶다는 깊은 열망을 느꼈습니다.

무엇보다 이번 경험은 저에게 ‘최후의 심판’ 날을 떠올리게 했습니다. 부활의 영광 속에서 위대한 재판장이신 주님 앞에 서서, 천사들의 찬송을 받으며 마침내 ‘하늘 시민권’을 공식적으로 받게 될 그날을 상상해 보았습니다.

천국에 있는 본래의 시민권을 얻기까지, 저는 이렇게 기도합니다. “주님, 이 새로운 미국 시민권을 통해 주의 백성들을 섬기며 하나님을 영화롭게 하게 하소서!”

저와 저희 가족의 이 긴 여정을 함께 걸어주신 모든 분께 감사드립니다. 여러분 덕분에 오늘이 아주 뜻깊은 날이 되었습니다!
